10 April 2011 - Cattistock

A first visit for Dorsetcamera to this Dorset village.

The village church dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. The present church dates from the late 19th century. The church registers go back to 1558. The churchyard won an award in the Dorset Wildlife Trusts Living Churchyard competition a few years ago. It was easy to see why. On our visit the primroses were looking really beautiful.

I have tried to find out more about this well in the lower churchyard without much success.

The inscription on the arch reads “Thou visitest the earth and waterest it”, a quotation from Psalm 69.

The magnolia here framed the church nicely. Shame about the wires.

An inquisitive Dorset Horn sheep in the field behind the church.

A recently planted avenue of trees on the path to the south of the church.

No need to explain this sign!

The churchyard and war memorial.

I did not realise at first that this is the font. A rope and pulley system allows the wooden cover to be lifted for baptisms.

The walls were unusually colourful in this part of the church.
