Salisbury Cathedral dates from the 13th century. The spire is the tallest in Britain at a height of 404 feet.

During our visit there was an exhibition of sculptures by the figurative sculptor Sean Henry. This is just one of more than twenty which were on display both inside and outside the Catherdral.

Below the eastern window are these terracotta figures. First shown at Tate Britain in 1996-97, The Apostles Speaking in Tongues Lit By Their Own Lamps is a grouping of 33 terracotta figures which represent a dramatic re-enactment of the events narrated in the New Testament when the Holy Spirit came amongst the Apostles in the ‘form of cloven fire’.

The Quintessentially British Baron on the cathedral green. This is one of the 25 Baron’s placed in various locations around the city. They are part of the city’s celebration of 800 years since the sealing of Magna Carta.

This is also part of the 800 years celebration. It is called Enlightenment. It has been erected in the north porch of the Cathedral. It is made from 6000 suspended lights creating a virtual world, enveloping and stimulating the viewer. The artwork is concerned with the idea of the ripple effect of Magna Carta, how its principles have changed and how its influence has spread across the globe.
